The hubby and I went to see Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest yesterday. The theater was full even though this wasn’t opening weekend. This film is raking in bucketloads of money, and rightly so. I thought it was fun and really enjoyed Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly in their roles. There were lots of quirky Captain Jack Sparrow lines, lots of action, lots of heroism (particularly on the part of Will Turner, Bloom’s character). I did have problems with a scene toward the end of the movie. Something happened that I believe was out of character for one of the main three characters and tossed in to generate tension and interest in the third Pirates movie. It seemed wrong and gratuitous. Still, it was a fun summer day at the movies.
Something else I noticed while there was that many movie trailers now give too much away. I mean, foreshadowing is okay but don’t hit us upside the head with the foreshadowing two-by-four. There was one in particular that had hubby and I shaking our heads because you can pretty much see the entire story arc, including what seems like an inevitable ending, in the trailer. Leave some questions and suspense, people.

Let me guess, Trish. That scene that hit you wrong - did it, perchance, involve a kiss?

Yep! Pulled me right out of the story.

My son has seen it. He has the first movie memorised, but wasn’t as fond of this one even though he said it was fun. He said he could tell it was the second in a trilogy.

Teah, that kiss was dumb.

YES! Preach on sistah, Trish.

I went to see this movie and had to leave after an hour and a half to pick my son up. ARGH! So I never saw the end. I might just have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

Tanya, you had to leave! Ack. Yes, you could tell it was the middle of a trilogy just like you could tell The Two Towers was the middle of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Still good though.

You know how I feel about The Kiss, Trish. It was hot hot hot, but out of character? Well, I’m not so sure.
She did what she thought she had to do to save herself. The problem I have is The Big Misunderstanding that comes after. That’s the part I had a problem with.

Her actions still bug me, but the Big Misunderstanding was annoying too. It’s such a bad plot device, lazy really.

Okay, I went back yesterday to see the movie. I didn’t have a problem with the kiss. What ticked me off was what Jack did to Will. I know Jack is a devious bastard, but I honestly think that move was out of character. Jack, at least the Jack from the first movie, wouldn’t have done that. YES, he’s a self-serving SOB. You can’t trust him as far as you can throw him, but the thing with Will, Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman servitude yanked me out of the story. I had a hard time getting back into Jack. It’s one thing to show a character’s flaws, but what he did bordered on unredemable.
If he were to send another crew member into that situation, then yes, I would have accepted it. But to send Will? Nope. It just didn’t ring true.
As for the kiss, after what Jack did to Will, who can blame her? I think her actions were the result of a buildup of frustration with Jack. She’s been trying to get to Will the entire movie, and placed her trust in Jack based on the relationship they fostered in the last film. So for him to act so uncharacteristically vicious and heartless, well, it pushed her over the edge. I think she regretted her behavior at the end, but I honestly don’t see it as coming out of left field.

I took from the kiss what Tanya did - she did it to save Will. But the dh turned to me and said, “She would never do that.” And really, after the scene at the beginning, where they both give Jack his credit as “CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow,” I thought they would be more understanding.
