Trying new things

This week’s theme for #UpbeatAuthors is trying new things. I really like this topic because I think it’s so easy to fall into a rut of doing the same thing over and over and that leading to boredom with life in general. And who wants to be bored with life? Not me.

This idea of trying new things doesn’t have to be as dramatic as taking up sky diving which, for the record, I’m NEVER going to do. One of my big goals for the year is to get on a plane again. That’s scary enough. I certainly don’t want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. My tendency is to try reading new authors or a different genre, watching new shows or movies, visiting new places. Occasionally I throw in something completely new, like when I took a beginning sewing class last year.

Ask yourself, “What have I always wanted to try?” And then make an action plan for how to try it. If it’s something currently out of your budget, like my desire to visit Ireland and Scotland, figure out how much money you need to do it and then make a plan how to save up that amount and what steps you need to take to make it happen (i.e. get a passport, decide if you want to go with a tour company or wing it on your own, figure out how you want to travel and to where, etc.). If it’s more manageable, like you want to learn how to decorate cakes (either for fun or to launch your own business), sign up for one of those classes like the ones they have a JoAnn’s.

One thing I want to do this year is watch all the Disney animated movies that I’ve not seen. I’d also like to begin to watch all the Oscar winners for Best Picture. This is how you can do something new within the confines of something you already enjoy doing.

What’s something new you’d like to try in 2018?
