Perhaps I’m the only 38-year-old woman who watches Smallville, but that’s okay. Even though it doesn’t have the spark it did in early seasons, that’s not unusual for a show that starts with the characters in high school then moves beyond that. I much preferred the first three years of Buffy the Vampire Slayer than the last four seasons. I mean, there was the inherent difficulties of high school life, the Scooby Gang, Willow and Oz, and Angel!

Okay, back to Smallville. Once upon a time, I was a big fan of the Clark and Lana relationship even though I knew it couldn’t last. I’m so over that now, and I’m glad they’re showing signs of Clark and Lois growing closer. I’m wondering if this season will be the last and, if so, how they’ll handle the budding Clark and Lois relationship. Also, I wonder if in the series finale, we’ll finally see Tom Welling don the Superman costume. I know lots of fans want to see that. Oh, and him actually flying, which he has yet to do.

The recent episode “Bride” was one of the better ones lately, but I was left with some burning questions about Chloe. Is she under some sort of mind control? Does that explain her smile at Doomsday/Davis after he seriously injured her new husband, Jimmy Olson, and abducted her? And is this the end of Chloe, as hinted at by Lois when Clark said they’d get Chloe back and she asked, “What if we can’t?” Part of me knows Chloe has to go bye-bye at some point (sob!) because Jimmy is not married in the Superman world. Plus, we’d never heard of Chloe (or Lana, for that matter). It seems Clark having Jor-El take away all those memories Chloe had of his secret identity was the first step toward Chloe’s departure. By the way, I HATED that those memories were erased. I know Clark was trying to help lift her burden, but it almost makes all their adventures together and their close friendship…less somehow. It’d be like if Buffy had gone through seven seasons of kicking butt solo without the Scooby Gang, without them ever knowing she was more than just a classmate.

So, any Smallville fans out there? What do you think about Chloe? What is going on with her reaction to Davis in his Doomsday form? Will we ever see her alive again? If she’s gone, it just feels like this needs to be the last season.

One of my new favorite songs, “Don’t Take Your Love Away” by Vast (who, coincidentally, did a song, “Touched,” on the Angel soundtrack) played at the end of “Bride.” Here’s a Clark and Lois fan vid courtesy of YouTube set to the song.

Oooohhhh you’re not the only Trish who is a romance writer and is of, erm, a certain age, who watches Smallville. Though when I say watch that is much closer to ‘obsessively’ than it is to ‘every now and again’…

I’m LOVING season eight so far. And new mature, pro-active Clark falling for Lois is making it addictive viewing for me. (I forgive you for shipping Lana and Clark by the way – even briefly) The Superman fan in me has finally got the show she’s been waiting seven years for. The Tom Welling fan in me, well, she’s a very happy bunny. The spoiler addict in me is struggling with the most ridiculously long hiatus in the history of… history…

I went to Comic Con before Nationals this year and was at the Smallville panel. Justin Hartley and Allison Mack looked just like they do onscreen. Go figure ;)

LOL, so many things in common, Trish. :) I agree with the Tom Welling comment. He is mighty fine to look at.

That’s awesome that you saw them at ComicCon. Justin Hartley is far from hard to look at either. :) I went to DragonCon for the first time this year and got to meet some people from Battlestar Galactica, Firefly and Buffy (James Marsters). VERY fun.

So what do you think about Chloe’s fate? And do you think this is the last season for the show?

  3. Trish Wylie says:

    Separated at birth obviously ;)

Justin DEF not hard to look at. And a funny, funny guy. Am jealous of you for DragonCon, especially since I’m a huge Firefly fan too.

Now. On the subject of Smallville. How much of a geek do you want me to be on this subject? Think carefully before you answer… :) I think Chloe will be de-Brainiaced, probably in the next episode cos I know – and am ridiculously excited – about the Legion coming to Smallville for the first time thanks to Geoff god-of-comics Johns. But what I’m fascinated to find out is if she re-learns the big secret. The writing this year is SO much better than it’s been in a while. So I’m hoping it’s not the last season. Plenty of room there to do the death by Doomsday arc as a season cliffhanger. I think we’ll know pretty soon after Christmas though… Have to say I’ll be devastated when it ends :(

I was wondering about Chloe’s creepy smile at the end, too. The show won’t be back with new episodes until after the new year.

I stopped watching Smallville last year, I think it was (maybe even the year before) because it was getting so ridiculous. I never liked Lana, though she is part of the original Superman mythology, as his first love. Hearing what you’re saying about Chloe, I’m glad I didn’t restart watching it when I heard Oliver was coming back. Her creepy smile at the end of the last new episode (it’s right before Supernatural, I always catch the last minute!) was frightening.

Trish, another Firefly fan! At DragonCon, I was able to have my photo taken with Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk.

Jane, I’m just glad I’m going to be busy between now and the new episodes. Hopefully, I’ll get a lot done between now and Jan. 15 so I can really enjoy the rest of the season.

Natalie, I didn’t know Lana was part of the original mythology. I will admit that I’m not sure I’ve read many, if any, Superman comics. The only ones I read with any regularity were the X-Men when I was in college.
